Written in a one-to-one style, this book focuses specifically on the needs of business students and looks at length at the various aspects of studying this discipline. Practical in its approach, the book discusses the purpose of study and the different challenges students may encounter on a business degree course, the relationship between students and lecturers, the assignments they will be expected to submit–many of which are specific to a business course, and how a business degree is linked to a future career.

“The maverick’s way of conducting business forswears the leader as commanding general; it rejects the practice of top-down, authoritative command. Rather, it proposes the leader as catalyst, conscience, and inspirer . . . The true leader sees his job as setting an environment in which new ideas can emerge that neither he nor any other individual anticipated. That leap of imagination, that moment of genuine creativity, can only be inspired by a leader who encourages exploration and shows a willingness to consider a totally new approach.” –from Mind Your Own BusinessThe corporate misdeeds of self-serving executives during the high-octane economy of the 1990s have forced many people to rethink the qualities that make a strong leader. For sixty years, Sidney Harman, the chairman and CEO of the world’s premier manufacturer of high-end audio equipment, has stood apart from the crowd, building his business the old-fashioned way, by satisfying customers and, in doing so, making a healthy profit. His refreshingly employee-centric, bottoms-up approach to business is the secret of Harman International’s continuing success. In Mind Your Own Business, Harman shares his visionary ideas about leadership, providing a welcome contrast to the bad behavior of business leaders recently dominating the news. Harman focuses on creating a culture of personal responsibility throughout his company. He likens his top management team to a jazz quartet that listens to and improvises with one another to create harmony. He stresses the need to do more for workers at every level because employees are the company’s most valuable asset. At Harman International, he has established in-house classrooms to teach English, basic math, health, and music, and encourages his employees to pursue their potential. Now a hale and healthy eighty-five, Harman thinks that “an idea a day” is more important than the proverbial apple and that the key to a long life is a restless curiosity. In the bestselling tradition of Max DePree’s Leadership Is an Art, Mind Your Own Business is a frank, no-nonsense guide for those who want to bring strength, vitality, and values to their businesses—and to their lives.

In today’s fast paced world of instant gratification and the need for instant results, the important step of cultivation is all too often brushed over or skipped. We are sucked in by the powerful advertising campaign,. instant success, overnight success, earn a million this year. We think that just wanting alone can make it happen. We have got used to the culture where if you want something you get it, regardless of whether you have the money to pay for it or not. Children get what they want, no longer being encouraged to save up for things. We may think we are being nice to them but in actual fact we are depriving them of the gratification of achievement, forcing them to grow up in an environment where they think everything can be had instantly. We are actually setting them up for failure, because they will never have learnt the lesson of cultivating success. If it does not come instantly, they will give up. They will have no idea of the concept of planting, spending time cultivation and finally harvesting. Many people, when they first start working on their home business online opportunity, take the first step, they buy lots of courses on how to market their opportunity. They download them to their computer, then sit back and wait for success. Regardless of how good an Internet marketing promotion course is, it will fail to produce results unless the steps outlined in it are taken consistently. The missing link in all of the above is time.
We have lost the ability to manage and understand time. but time will be either good or bad to us depending on the choices we make today. Because the effects will not be seen immediately but long after the choice was made. The choices we make today will sow the seeds for the future. The problem is that the choices are easy and seemingly insignificant, so we do not instantly see the effects of doing/not doing them until it is too late. “Success is the progressive realisation of a worthy ideal. There is no need to make tough choices on the road to success; we need to make easy choices. But its about taking the right choices, taking positive action, compounding our efforts over time. It does not matter where you are relative to your goals today, you can start afresh right now. Remember, every successful entrepreneur has a past and every failing entrepreneur has a future. Many successful people have not always been successful. Many have had many failures on their journey to financial freedom. The difference is, they did not give up, they looked forward and kept going. The past is gone, we can’t change it, don’t waste precious time regretting it. Use time instead to make the changes that will improve our future. Why are not willing to give ourselves say five years to achieve our goals, when we would then have the rest of our lives to enjoy the harvest of our labours? Start afresh today, make the positive choices, give yourself a realistic time frame to achieve your goals, forget the get rich quick scams and promises of easy money. Fill out the form on my blog and you will have planted the seed of your financial success. You will have an abundance of help to cultivate the seed allowing you to enjoy a rich harvest.

Hong Kong is a small city with a big reputation. As mainland China has become an ”economic powerhouse” Hong Kong has taken a route of development of its own, flourishing as an entrepot and a centre of commerce and finance for Chinese business, then as an industrial city and subsequently a regional and international financial centre. This volume examines the developmental history of Hong Kong, focusing on its rise to the status of a Chinese global city in the world economy. Chiu and Lui’’s analysis is distinct in its perspective of the development as an integrated process involving economic, political and social dimensions, and as such this insightful and original book will be a core text on Hong Kong society for students.
